Today is the CHL trade deadline, which means it’s the final day for teams in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL to load up for potential Memorial Cup runs.
Two Thrashers prospects changed hands, though the trades have no impact on their status with the Thrashers. They remain our prospects- they’re just changing junior teams.
2009 fourth-round pick Ben Chiarot was dealt from the OHL’s Guelph Storm to the Sudbury Wolves where the talented dman will play with fellow prospect Eric O’Dell who was acquired by the Thrashers last year in exchange for Erik Christensen.Chairot, who was drafted more for his defensive ability, has four goals and 13 points in 41 games, surpassing his two goals and 12 points from all of last season.
The other deal saw WHL winger Jimmy Bubnick go from the Kamloops Blazers to the Calgary Hitmen- the former squad of defenseman Paul Postma. Bubnick was taken in the sixth round (155th overall) of last summer’s draft. He had 17 goals and 40 points in 44 games with Kamloops and goes from a seventh-place team to a fourth-place squad that’s just four points out of the conference lead.
The trades don’t have any immediate impact on the Thrashers, but the change in scenery could do both players well, and it never hurts to have two payers in the same system like O’Dell and Chiarot playing together at the junior level and learning each other’s tendencies and strengths.
That’s great news for both guys… gotta like those two developing in Sudbury and Calgary now.
