With four games in six days and plenty of bumps and bruises up and down the roster the Thrashers were given this morning off to rest up and recuperate so they can be ready for the Hurricanes tomorrow night and their trip to Tampa on Saturday. They put in solid efforts on Monday and Tuesday night and were rewarded for it with a much needed 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs last night.
Ondrej Pavelec called it “a fun game” and I’m not inclined to disagree. It was wide open hockey, which plays to the strengths of the Thrashers, and Ilya Kovalchuk made them pay in what was one of his most dominant performances of the season. Kovalchuk had two goals and an assist to go with a season-high eight shots.
No other Thrasher had more than a point but eight of them got on the scoresheet including Kane and Peverley who each picked up a goal.
What are your thoughts on the game? If you weren’t able to attend or watch it on TV here are the highlights. The Thrashers now sit in 10th place with 51 points, one point out of eighth and six points out of fifth.
Other than being told that my horn (heard on parts of the highlights) was disturbing other patrons (IT’S A HOCKEY GAME!!!), I had a great time. Winning is great, but beating a team with so much away support is even better.

Much improved Power Play last night… I definitely like Armstrong and Peverley out there playing an upclose/net game.

Hey Ben… after Kovy’s second goal last night, his celebration looked like he was scribbling his name on the ice. Ask him if that means anything (ie: contract)?

Thrashers didn’t have a good start including a bone head give away from Hainsey not 10 seconds in and they stood around and like that Leafs dude (can’t remember nor spell his name) just skate hard to the net and get behind all the Thrashers defenders but they came back and played a 50 minute complete game effort.

That celebration Kovy gave after scoring the second goal was absoultely refeshing. Kovy is showing that his top priority is to help this team win. Whether he stays or leaves, it’s great to see that he’s still passionate about his team and not just playing out his contract like some players (see Boumeester, Jay). I’ve said some bad things about him over the years, but he’s been near even or a plus player all season and he’s become a true leader on this team. Even if he get’s traded, I don’t think this is the last we see of Ilya Kovalchuk in Atlanta.
