I’d love to write some more about the trade but there’s a lot of other stuff to take care of right now. Fortunately some other people are on top of things:
- Headline Hockey has plenty of articles in their link roundup
- Craig Custance shares his thoughts on the deal
- Chris Vivlamore with a transcript of a Don Waddell scrum explaining the deal
- The Falconer shares a fan’s take on the move
- TSN’s Bob McKenzie kind of calls out the media for expecting a flashier trade, then says Waddell got what he was looking for in the deal, kind of like I said last night.
Finally, a fan on the message boards posted a link to sports columnist Bill Simmons’ well-known “Ewing Theory” column. Read it and tell me it couldn’t apply to a certain team here in Atlanta.
A couple quick notes:
- Oduya and Bergfors didn’t make it to the morning skate today but will play tonight in Washington
- Oduya will wear #29 and Bergfors will wear #18, the same numbers as in New Jersey
- The new players will make their home debuts tomorrow night against the Panthers
I read the Craig Constance article; it was very fair and balanced.
There was only one thing I didn’t like . . .
Memo to Colby Armstrong: Shut the **** up!
When did you become a spokesman for the team?
“Hockey is a team game,” Armstrong said. “I think we bring our group close together and play together … now we can move forward”
You’re gonna move forward, eh? Washington toyed with us for two periods last night and then slapped us in the third.
Armstrong, you should be embarassed by your lack of performance and should be hiding under a rock somewhere. Your 18 points are a joke.
No one wants to hear anything from you, especially about a trade of our star player.
Whenever you open your mouth, all you do is remind us that we got you and your sister “Christine” for Hossa.
You were supposed to be one of the young guns who would help us feel better about losing Hossa, remember?
We didn’t expect you to score 100 points, but we DID expect you to mature and get better. When is that going to start?
Heck, Pascal Dupuis laughs at you, and he was the “throw in” player in the Hossa deal!
So until you start to bring it on the ice, “know your role and shut your mouth”. (The Rock)
And for all you apologists for management, I don’t want to hear anymore BS about “well, that’s the best deal could get for Hossa or Kovy”.
“Management” isn’t waiting until the last minute and scrounging around for crumbs when you have no leverage.
“Management” is having a plan that is thought out months or years in advance.
Why is anyone shocked or surprised when a great player wants to go play on a team that is a Cup contender????
Kovy said he wanted to be a Thrasher forever and you take it as gospel?
What did you expect him to say . . . “we got some better players, but we still suck, the fans don’t show up, and I’m sick of being on this team”?
It’s a BUSINESS. He and his agent are making a decision that will effectively cover the best years of his career.
So he goes to the Devils, where he could be on a Cup winning team, probably as a rental player, and tests the free agency waters this summer. It’s the best thing for him to do and while you may not like it, you have to agree that it makes sense.
Let see here, I’m going to do a little Thrasher math.
Hossa + Kovulchuk=175 points a year. (I won’t include Savard, that would be rubbing salt in the wound)
Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito, Cormier, Bergfors, OhDoMe, Moe, Larry, and Cheese=75 points a year.
Great, that’s the “moving forward and building for the future” that will fill the seats.
The thing about being a Thrasher fan is that even when we are losing games in bunches, and missing the playoffs 9 out of 10 years, there are a few moments in each game that are exciting and give you a ray of hope.
Your Superstar is the guy who you usually can count on for those moments.
With no Superstar, you have no exciting moments to look forward to.
