Thrashers prospect and rookie pro defenseman Paul Postma has been named the AHL player of the week. He had a hat trick yesterday as the Chicago Wolves beat the San Antonio Rampage (here is some video) and had four goals and two assists for the Wolves last week as well as a +6 rating over four games. Chicago has won eight straight and has only lost once in regulation since January 1.
Postma, who turns 21 today, has nine goals and 17 points this season and has stepped up his game in recent weeks. He has also stepped up his training regimen. The formerly wiry defenseman was 6-3, 173 lbs when he was drafted and is now listed at 190 lbs on Chicago’s web site. Postma led WHL defensemen in goals (23), assists (61), and points (84) last season and was a steal for the Thrashers as a seventh round pick in 2007.
I can’t wait to see him on the Thrashers blueline in a season or two.

With all of the nagging injuries to Boris and the looming UFA status of Pavel Kubina, I was starting to get worried about the future of the blueline. Now with Postama and Kulda as well as Toby and Bogo in Atlanta, I’m pretty excited. This team has never been known to really develop d-men that well, but with those four, it looks like we’re turning a corner and I love it!

Imagine if we could get Ilya Nikulin to come and play for us. He’s been impressive for Russia at the Olympic games and has really progressed well. It’s great to see him playing a position that only takes about 7 skaters for a great team.
I’d love to see him play in Atlanta but I think we’re about as likely to see Ilya Kovalchuk playing here again as we are to see Ilya Nikulin.

I CANT BELEIVE I FORGOT ABOUT MY BOY TOBY!
but i remember reading somewere during the summer that the thrashers haven’t been very good at drafting and other than the obvious picks we haven’t had any good late round picks who have contributed or impressed.(this is what i read.)
i read that in the summer i think in the hockey news but i cant remember, but obviously our scouting and drafting is improving.
esspecialy on european defensemen.
