2010 Trade Deadline Blogathon

New posts at the bottom.

10:20 am: Welcome to the 2010 trade deadline day. I’m sequestered in a sound-proof room up in Duluth, away from management and scouts where I can’t here or see anything. I’ll be updating this blog throughout the day with anything I do find out and can report without risk of being fired. There’s no guarantee that the Thrashers will make any trades today, but my guess is something will happen. If nothing else we’ll at least get an update on the waiver wire at noon and find out of Chris Chelios is Thrashers property or if he got claimed by someone else.

The Thrashers have a practice at 11am so I’ll be watching that as well and hopefully talking to our newest Thrasher, Evgeny Artyukhin. I haven’t seen him yet but he’s already been referred to by one person as “Goliath”. By the way, he’ll be wearing number 76 as a Thrasher. He wore 24 in Anaheim which is technically available but there’s a defenseman waiting to clear waivers who wore it for a while in Detroit. I’m not saying it’s being held for him, but if you’re Artyukhin you probably don’t want to take it.

If you want to keep tabs on what’s going on in the NHL today you can watch the TSN trade deadline show via the NHL.com video player.

We’ll have video updates from Duluth throughout the day, including interviews with Don Waddell, Rick Dudley, and Evgeny Artyukhin. Darren Eliot and our video guy, Kyle, just went to talk to Don right now.

10:30 am: If you want to look back at past trade deadline days in Thrashers history check out this story. Some years have been busy (2007, 2008) and others not so much (2009). With Kovalchuk and Lehtonen already dealt today might see many big Thrashers moves, but perhaps Don Waddell and his staff will be able to accommodate Slava Kozlov’s trade request, or maybe someone else gets moved opening a lineup spot so Slava can play more. Is there anyone on the market that you’d like to see the Thrashers go after?

11:06 am: Evgeny Artyukhin is on the ice for his first Thrashers practice. He’s skating with Peverley and Afinogenov. Antropov is sitting this one out so White slides into his spot with Little and Bergfors. All other lines are as normal and everyone is on the ice, including Kozlov and Armstrong who have both been mentioned by media as trade targets.

For the record all of the team scouts are here, as well as at least one owner (Bruce Levenson). Odds are something is in the works.

11:15 am: Craig Custance and his crew are doing a liveblog over at The Sporting News. It’s very easy to keep up with- much more so than the one at Puck Daddy. In it Craig said that he’s been told the Thrashers would part with the first round pick acquired from the Devils in the Kovy deal. That’s a big bargaining chip on a day like this.

11:24 am: Arash Madani is a reporter for Canada’s Sportsnet and he was among the first to report us signing Chelios so he’s got connections. He’s now reporting via Twitter that we won’t trade Kubina today and that he’s close to signing an extension. Great news. Not as great if you’re a Colby fan- Arash says the Thrashers are getting a lot of calls about him and he’ll be dealt by the end of the day.

11:35: From the ever reliable Kevin Allen of USAToday, via Twitter: “Thrashers have hits on Kozlov, still undecided about Colby Armstrong, actively negotiating for potential top six forward.”

11:59 am: Here is the first video of the day, with Don Waddell talking about trade deadline day. Good stuff from the Thrashers GM.

12:28 pm: Just got word that Chris Chelios has cleared waivers and will stay with the Wolves for the time being. The players are finished practice for the day and a lot of them were in a hurry to get home so they can follow deadline day action. If you’re a player nervous about getting dealt you probably don’t want to be hanging around all afternoon.

12:47 pm: The biggest trade of the day went down a little while ago with with Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter going to Colorado for Wojtek Wolski. Thrashers fans were interested in both players and it looks like neither one will be coming to Atlanta.

In other news, here’s a video of Dan Kamal talking to Thrashers Associate GM Rick Dudley talking about Evgeny Artyukhin and the trade deadline in general. Keep in mind that Dudley was the GM of the Lightning when they drafted Artyukhin.

1:13 pm: Add another video to your afternoon viewing. Here is Artyukhin’s first interview as a Thrasher.

1:54 pm: Just over an hour until the trade deadline and there’s no news on the Thrashers front that I’m aware of. Then again, I ‘m locked in our sound-proof bunker with our video guy, Dan Kamal and Darren Eliot. We’re making the best of it, but let’s just say this deadline day has been lacking. In one move of note, former Thrasher Eric Belanger has been dealt back to the Southeast Division after being acquired for a second-round pick.

2:42 pm: The Thrashers have acquired left wing Clark MacArthur from the Buffalo Sabres for a 3rd and 4th round pick in this year’s draft. MacArthur is 5-10, 191 lbs, and has 13 goals and 13 assists in 60 games this season. He played for Thrashers assistant coach Randy Cunneyworth in Rochester (Buffalo’s AHL team) so there should be a level of familiarity there.

3:20 pm: Chris Vivlamore has been told the Thrashers aren’t doing anything else today, which means Slava Kozlov and Colby Armstrong are staying put. The Thrashers now have 15 forwards.

Bourque just signed an extension, he’s not going anywhere. I would love to see us bring in Wolski, but that would probably require Army or Max in return, two guys who I don’t want to see moved. My guess is all we get for Slava is a late round pick.

I Would love to Wolski, as well! I don’t expect a lot of movement on the Thrashers part today. I would guess that the hope would be to get Kubina and Army signed to an extension. I question whether either really want to be here.

  7. Daculafan says:

The Falconer brought up Corey Stillman. He’d be a good pick, a little slow but great hands. All the scuttlebutt I’m hearing says that Kubina is not even a consideration to move.

Slava wants a trade and I don’t think we’ll re-sign Army so he wouldn’t be a bad move to make. You could package Army and Slava to Colorado for Wolski and a late round pick. I’m sure that’s very doubtful but a guy can hope can’t he?

Hmmm, the Czech Olympic duo between the pipes? It’s a possibility, definitely. And I did like Vokoun’s play in the Olympics. But I’m glad to hear Kubina is close to signing. As for Army, I’d hate to see him leave, but if it has to be done, package him with Kozzy for either a great player or a pair of solid forwards. No real suggestions on who.

  12. mutton says:

I think Kozzy and Army could fetch Wolski, Stillman, or Svatos, just to name the guys that the Falconer mentioned. I kinda like Stempniak, but I dunno if he would fit well with the Thrashers and would rather not see a lot given up for him.

To be honest, I think I’d prefer Stillman. Stillman for Army, not Kozlov because he probably wouldn’t waive his NTC, but throw in a pick or D prospect (just not that 1st rounder I hope) and see if they bite.m

Kansas The Thrashers are fine on picks they picked up a lot of prospects and are making deals that are not based on the numbers but what players can do to help us make it to the playoffs. Once MacArthur leaves Buffalo and is in Atlanta who cares about any of the numbers he had in Buffalo its a completely new team and a completely new line for him. Also anonymous I agree about Max he has gotten a little selfish and as much as I like him it wouldn’t kill me if he was gone. For those who haven’t been watching the very boring trade deadline on TV all day more trades will still come in and hopefully Kozlov has found a new home.

15 forwards is too many forwards… we should have made another move. i would have been happy for just a bunch of draft picks for armstrong and kozlov because it sounds like army wont sign with the team and kozlov will watch the rest of the season from the press box.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  51. MP.. the Thrashers don’t need prospects… the team’s history on prospects is TERRIBLE. What Don needed to do is get some strong D, a Goal scorer to replace the loss of Kovy and deal Kozlov who is in his last season and very unhappy.

What we got is a guy who is a Career -11 with 79 pts in 4 seasons in the NHL and a bunch of Projects.

This was not the deal that a team that is on the bubble to make the playoffs should have made.

Kansas we also got some grit with Arty now in Atlanta. I agree that we have been unlucky with the prospects and Kovalchuk is a loss but he didn’t want to be here and Bergfors and Oduya are a great addition. In my mind not dealing Kozlov was a huge failure as well but there is nothing you can do about it now. As for defense I see nothing wrong with our blueline. Kubina has been phenominal, so has Enstrom, Oduya, and Hainsey. With Schubert back that will help Bogo and get some more physical play back into the lineup. As long as the Armstrong, Kane, Slater line keeps playing the way they have been and Peverly, Max, and Bergfors can keep putting up points we will do nothing but improve.

“When I recently chatted with [Colby], he said all the talk of him leaving is really overblown.”

Got to keep Kubina!!! Please sign him.

I would like Army to stay and Max as well, but in the end I believe you see Max, Army, White and Kozlov on new teams next year. That’s fine folks. We have tons of talent waiting to get here. Our Defense is already very heavy (literally)

I believe we go out and use some of our log jam at defensive talent to trade for a top 6 forward and also go after a top 3 goaltender.

I am not at all disappointed with today’s action, or lack thereof.

If we do not make the playoff’s this year oh well, but next year with Cormier, Kane, Little, Pevs, Antro, Bergfors, Reasoner, Thorburn, Bolts & Slater as forwards we have a great beginning.

As far as Defense: Kubina, Enstrom, Arty, Schubi, Hainsey, Bogo, and Oduya < not sure about his contract status we have a great blueline. Of course that leaves out Valabik, Kulda, Postma, Popovic and Welch to which we use a couple or in combonations to grab the aforementioned solid goaltender and top 6 forward.

Plus, we’ve got 5 UFA’s still un-signed and possibly gone (for nothing) come July 1st: Hedberg, Kubina, Max, Kozlov and Armstrong.

  72. Bottom line… we got a 4th line (at best) forward in MacArthur and gave up two picks in this year’s draft. What we’re getting is not equitable for what we’re giving up.

We didn’t take the chance to move Kozlov, one of my all time favorite players by the way, who will probably retire at the end of this season, so we gain nothing there.

We’re a 10th place team fighting for a playoff spot, and our GM and Owners didn’t do what they should have done to secure that spot. If we do squeak by and make a 8th place spot, our chance of advancing with this team is not very good.

It’s a shame the owners are unwilling to spend the money on the Thrashers to give us the product we deserve.

By the way.. my name is a snide remark about what I see in the future for this franchise.

BG how in the world are you going to disrespect Kovy hes been nothing but good to us. Hossa was a different story he didnt like thrashers and hes not a good person. but Kovy is a good person and he loves the thrashers. Kovy is the most respected player we ever had because he wasnt like “im going to leave because this team isnt going anywhere.” Kovy want to finish what he start unfortunately it didnt work out. But call Kovy a “half ass player” is so disrespectful. Ill bet if you go to a Maple Leaf and say that Sundin is a “half ass player” you get hit in the face. Because hes is one of the most respected Leaf player ever….This Thrashers team was built around Kovalchuk but now we got to find a center piece for the thrashers. I guarantee if Dany Heatley was still was a Thrasher this team would in their 4 playoffs.

  83. @SV- Have someone explain the KC Thrashers joke to you…
Also, the Owners will not make moves in the Front Office… if they were going to get rid of Don Waddell they would have done it years ago.

@Ben – The ownership of this franchise has a history of not being willing to spend money to attract or keep the talent that is needed to build a winner. Today is just another example.

I truly hope that the team proves me wrong and makes it deep into the playoffs, but I’m starting to think the Thrashers are becoming the Detroit Lions of Hockey.

Rest of this Season and Offseason is the most important season that Thrashers have. MacArthur(UFA), Kozlov(UFA) most likely go to KHL, Afinogenov(UFA), Armstrong(UFA), Artyukhin(UFA), Little(RFA), Kubina(UFA), Pavelec(RFA), Hedberg(UFA) Slater(UFA) Slater have been doing well late in the season. If the Thrashers dont make it. I think most of these players will leave unless their RFA. If the thrashers dont get the big name players. Its doesnt look good.

  85. @SV – If, we had kept Kovy, Heatley, Hossa, Tkachuck, Savard, Holik, and a slew of other player’s we might have a Stanley Cup.

    IF

The problem is that no one wants to come play here or they want to get out of here, they know the issues with the Owners, they know that they will not pay to build a winner (see: Detroit, Pittsburgh, Washington, Chicago).

It is truly a shame and a disservice to the Hockey fans of Atlanta.

im glad we didnt sell much to get what we did. we need to invest in the near future. i dont know why most people are so pumped about the thrashers hopefully making the playoffs. the only thing worse than not winning a playoff game in our only trip to the playoffs would be not winning a playoff game in 2 trips to the playoffs! seriously, if we barely sneak in then we have a good chance of getting humiliated by washington or new jersey. i dont think making the playoffs are worth it unless you have a serious shot at making a push, otherwise we should collect for the future.

in other words, im happy with today because we didnt buy too much. its just a shame kozlov (and whoever else were not going to sign in the off season) couldnt be moved for draft picks.

No Ben, MacArthur is in his 4 season in the NHL and being played 1.4M. a Prospect Contract is 3 year and I think they get paid is like max 850k or less.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  89. @Ben – those numbers include the payroll for players that we had under contract and weren’t playing. Spending money to hit the cap on players like Stefan, Zhitnik, and Rico Fata does not build a winner.

It’s not the money you spend, it’s the value you get for it. We have made some bad purchases. While some of our UFA may go else where, there are plenty of the same calibre available. And the reality is several UFAs wont have buyers if we don’t make the playoff.

All great guys, but all, except for maybe Max at this point, replaceable.

i dont think Kubina is replaceable hes a big guy that can hit, shoot, and skate fast. Thats not easy to replace.

  94. @SV – Waddell hasn’t been fired yet.. what makes you think this is the year he’ll be fired?

Keep in mind, he’s not only the GM, but the Executive Vice President & General Manager, Atlanta Thrashers, and Executive Vice President, Atlanta Spirit LLC. So he’s his own boss.

    He keeps getting promotions….

this the thrashers 10 season and made the playoffs once. I dont think he fired from hes other job but I think the owner will tell him to step down. Waddell been garbage I think Dudley will do a much better job than Waddell. I was watching the Flordia game yesterday and its looks like the arena was empty which wasnt good.

  98. @Ben – It’s hard to tell who was available unless we were sitting in the Thrashers War room and heard what the other 29 clubs were offering.

Asking the fans what they would have done isn’t very fair unless you’re willing to show us what other teams had available.

All we have to go on is what we got (4th line Forward) and what we gave up (2 picks).

@The Hill who can put up near 40 points, Thats is 6’4 250, Thats can take out the body and that can skate fast as a Offense player. Valabik cant replace Kubina. Valabik doesnt put up points, he can shoot put hes accuracy isnt good, and he cant skate fast, but he can take out the body.

I am not a DW fan, but he was given credit for helping pull the USA team together. He has good hockey sense, yet I think he has been limited to what he can do. With that said, he reached out and got Rick D here so maybe we can start getting more value for our money.

Well Ben personally I feel we could have gotten rid of a few players that don’t fit our ID anymore I.E todd white and kozlov. I love the guys just dont think they fit the team anymore.

I love schubert and kinda like valabik but with our ahl situation being loaded with guys who are going to be incredible defensive players I see schubs and boris as future trades.

It seems likes pevs is lacking a winger maybe macarthur is that guy or artyukin. I wanted to see maybe teddy purcell or mueller be brought in.
Also we have a situation in net, we have an older respected on again off again clutch in the shootout goalie and an on again off again rookie goalie. It’s not a stable net. Rumor was Thomas was on the market I know Montreal had the situation with Price and Halak I woulda loved to see Thomas or Halak brought in to maybe give that stability and clear up some room in our locker.

Just a side note I Kinda feel like buffalo’s dumpster lol we get alot of they’re players.

  103. @SV – Dudley is cut from the same cloth as Waddell… don’t think that putting him in the GM’s chair will change things, Don will still control the roster as the VP and nothing will change.
Most other teams wouldn’t have given a GM 10 years and been happy with what has not been accomplished. Face it, the owners are too busy fighting with each other and spending money on the Hawks to build a winning hockey team or care who the GM is.

To be fair about last night’s game:
    a) They were playing Florida (not much of a draw there)
    b) It was a Tuesday Night
    c) It was snowing (a/k/a a Georgia Blizzard, 1-2 inches).
    and
    d) come on.. it was Florida… they wouldn’t have drawn a crowd on a Saturday afternoon if they offered free Hot Dogs and Cokes…..

@michael Halak wasnt going to get trade hes doing to well, but Price and Thomas on the market also Biron and Roloson also Vokoum. I think we need a Playoff goalie and we should have picked up Roloson. we would have to give much for him. we could of gave up Kozlov(if he wanted to go their).

Let’s stop complaining about the crowds. I am a 10 year STH and have moved from the upper level to the lower level and my tickets cost me $5 more a game then they did 10 years ago. I have only forked out money for playoff tickets once (more rounds of golf for me), and get to see the greatest players in the world (mostly for the other side) play the fastest game in the world and have little traffic going and coming.

Stop complaining, enjoy it while we have it and if by some chance we start winning, and I need to move back up stairs and buy playoff tickets, I’ll do it gladly. The fans are here, we just need a reason to bring our friends along.

SV – Kozy wanted to go to a playoff team that could go deep or win the cup. Most of the goalies you mentioned are on teams he wouldn’t go to. Also, most of those guys are in the east and probably wouldn’t be available to us. All the teams in the East except Toronto probably are thinking they still have a shot.

If we were going to get better, we needed to look West. Available talent from the west would have been hard to come by without a heavy price.

@Sv Thats right I forgot the situation in New York, Roloson would have been a great addition but i think with dipietro going out again (surprise?) they mighta be hanging onto both biron and roloson at least right now. Jonathon Bernier in the kings ahl team would also have been good not really a playoff goalie yet still young but id like him in a wolves jersey at the very least.
