Could Ilya Kovalchuk Play Hockey with His Son?

Ilya Kovalchuk has re-signed with the New Jersey Devils (they play at Philips Arena on Dec. 18 and Dec. 30) and if the rumors of it being  a 17-year deal are correct an interesting scenario could play out.  It’s a long shot, but hear me out.

Kovalchuk’s contract would expire on July 1, 2027. That summer his oldest son Philipp will be draft eligible (assuming he plays the game and inherits some of his father’s talent).  How crazy would it be if 17 years from now Kovalchuk signed a one or two year deal with whatever team drafts his son so that he could play in the NHL with him his rookie year? That’s assuming Kovy wants to play in the NHL when he’s 45, but if he plans to play until he’s 44 (which is how old he’d be when his 17 year deal expires) what’s another year if it means he could play with his son? If he hangs on until 46 he could, in theory, also play with (or against) his second son who was born this past spring.

Who cares? Ilya is a douche and although I like the Devils alot….17 years is a long time to commit for a one trick pony who will for sure lose a couple steps and a few m.p.h on the old fastball….but good luck Lou haha

Ilya will never play hockey with his son. This deal is front-loaded — his salary drops like a lead balloon to $500K for the last 5 years and $750K for the year prior. Think he has any intention of sticking around for that? The league should be investigating this. It’s all number fudging to get the cap hit down to $6M per. If you assume he only plays 11 years of the deal, then the cap hit would really be $9.27M. That $3.37M difference is about 50% more — or in the post-lockout era equates to a very solid player who wouldn’t otherwise fit under the cap.

Maybe that should read “an additional $3.37M player on NJ’s roster who wouldn’t otherwise fit under their cap.” Sorry, it just didn’t seem clear when I read over it.

After Artem was born Ilya made some remark that maybe someday they could all play on one line together.

Ilya has never dealt with a major injury and he plays the type of game where he only plays when he has the puck so he doesnt seem injury prone like Bure or Ovechkin. 45 is still really old by NHL standards however.

I’d say he should play with his daughter when she is 18 becuase Ilya Kovalchuk is a little girl.

kovy is 2 faced. He puts on a act. He said he Loves Atlanta. We offer him a better deal(12years 101M & 7years 70M) than 17years 102M. In the interview he doesnt even answer the question right. smh I give LeBron respect at least he told the truth why he left cleveland. but kovy just lies. I Promise you once Marty Brodeur retires the devils wont be a Cup contender or maybe not even a playoff team!
