Ladd Named an Alternate Captain of Team Canada

Congratulations to Thrashers captain Andrew Ladd who was named one of four alternate captains of Canada’s national team that will compete  at the IIHF World Championships. Columbus Blue Jacket Rick Nash will serve as the captain of the team with Ladd, Dion Phaneuf (Toronto), Jason Spezza (Ottawa) and Travis Zajac (New Jersey) serving as the other three alternates.  The alternates will take turns wearing the two A’s just as the Thrashers did when they had four alternate captains in past seasons.

This will be Ladd’s first time playing for Team Canada since he donned the red and white in the World Junior Championships in 2004-05. Evander Kane will be his teammate in Slovakia where the duo will compete against Blake Wheeler, Mark Stuart and Tim Stapleton from Team USA, Ondrej Pavelec (Czech Republic) and Alex Burmistrov, who appears to have made Team Russia, although that has not been confirmed yet.

no mention of kulda playing in worlds for 2nd straight year. even though it is for latvia, it is worth a mention that one of the team’s top prospects is playing. good luck to arturs.

Will Ladd be back in Atlanta next year? Duds hinted that they were close to a deal a few months ago and I’m guessing that has fallen apart…

I wouldn’t expect any contract news with Ladd until after he gets back from Europe.

Ladd will go to arbitration and won’t be playing here next year. He will get an award that we can’t afford (see Clarke MacArthur) and we will be looking for another “C”

I’m going to have to disagree with you 100% there Michael.

We will know soon, but Dudley made it known months ago that they were talking and nothing has been finalized. There is a very good reason that he didn’t sign here…if you were in the prime of your career, would you play for a team that spends the league minimum in salary and has two mediocre players (Hainsey and Antro) making 20% of the total team salary?
